Hanging Exterior Christmas Lights on Your Home

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it’s not too late to get in the holiday spirit. You can add extra Christmas spirit by hanging exterior lights all over your house, especially if you haven't gotten around to it yet!

Hanging lights on the house is one of my favorite family traditions, but sometimes, things can get tricky. No one wants to make a decorating mistake and end up with a holiday fiasco.

Make your Christmas a little brighter by following this step by step guide to hanging exterior lights on your home this season!

You Will Need:

  • Strands of lights that will cover your desired amount of space
  • Light clips (these can be found at just about any hardware store and are safer than staples)
  • A ladder (if you plan on getting on the roof of your home)
  • Extension cord(s)

Steps:

1. Choose Your Lights

First, you should determine what type of lights you want to have on your home, and make sure all the strands are the same.

  • Do you want multicolor lights for fun pops of color or do you want bright white lights for an elegant Christmas?
  • Do you want the lights to twinkle or stay constant?
  • Do you want C7, C9, incandescent Christmas lights or LED Christmas lights?

I recommend LED lights because of their energy efficiency and longevity. You can check out their differences in this article by Mobile Home Repair Tips!

2. Prepare the Area

You should prepare the hanging area to make sure you have everything squared away before you begin. Make sure to use an outdoor extension cord for safety purposes.

You should also check the length of the cord to make sure it will go as far as you need.

3. Test Your Lights

Next, you should make sure the cords are not frayed or damaged, which can be hazardous.

Before you begin hanging your lights, you should make sure all of the bulbs work by plugging the strand in. This is so you don’t experience any unpleasant surprises!

4. Attach Lights

Now you can begin attaching your lights! Using the light clips, attach the strands to the shutters, shingles or gutter. Hang the lights pointing up or down as long as they are all clipped in the same direction.

If you don’t have gutters, or prefer to not get on the roof, you can attach the lights to the shingles. Do this all around and watch the Christmas cheer unfold!

5. Watch Them Shine!

Once you are done hanging the lights, plug them in and watch them shine! You can also add lights to any shrubs or trees around your home for extra holiday flair. Make sure to unplug or turn off your lights when you are not home and before you go to bed each night to keep your home safe.
