It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Christmas is only 12 days away! Hopefully by now your stockings have been hung, your Christmas tree has been trimmed and you’ve been enjoying holiday movies and hot chocolate in front of a beautiful fireplace in your Clayton Built® home.
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a few more gifts on your list to buy. (It’s ok to be a procrastinator – just embrace it). I’m at the age where most of my friends are settling down, getting married and buying their first home, and those friends are proving to be the hardest to buy for.
They have what they need, and they don’t seem to want anything specific. So, what do you buy a new homeowner for Christmas?
I sat down and made a list of a few of my favorite things I received when I bought my first house. This helped me get an idea of what you can get new homeowners that would be both functional and meaningful (because who needs more clutter laying around?!).
Check out this list of 12 practical gifts for new homeowners to help you decide what you’ll get a new homeowner for Christmas this year, and help them celebrate the fact that they’ve achieved the American Dream of homeownership!
1. Hammock Chairs
Hammock chairs, also called hammock swings, are a wonderful gift for a new homeowner! Hammock chairs are both fun and functional, and they can be used year-round indoors and outdoors if you also purchase a hammock chair stand. Hammock chairs range in price, but you can typically find one that fits within your Christmas gift budget.
2. Copper Mugs
These trendy copper mugs are a must-have gift for new homeowners. Perfect for him, her or him and her, these mugs are perfect for the traditional Moscow Mule, hot chocolate, coffee or any drink of choice. Many retail stores also offer personalized copper mugs with an initial or inscription making this the optimal personalized gift for a new homeowner.
3. French Press
If the new homeowner you’re buying for is a coffee lover, a French press coffee maker, also called a coffee press or a press pot, could be the best choice for your new homeowner’s Christmas gift. This affordable gift option can produce excellent coffee and tea drinks, is easy to clean and won’t take up too much counter space like traditional coffee makers can.
4. Movie Night Gift Basket
Some of the best gifts I received from my friends when I purchased by my first home were gift baskets they put together. Specifically, I loved the movie night gift basket my best friend gave me!
This simple new homeowner gift basket can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you want because you literally get to build it from scratch.
How to Make a New Homeowner Movie Basket
1.Grab a cute wicker or wire basket from your local convenience store2. Add some popcorn
3. Add your friend’s favorite drink
4. Throw in some movie theater candy
5. Add a DVD or a gift card for an online streaming company
6. Arrange all of the items in the basket
7. Wrap with cellophane and a festive Christmas bow
Voila! You have the perfect Christmas present for your friends or family who are new homeowners. And now you can invite yourself over to enjoy the wonderful gift!
5. Portable Record Player
The fun and quirky gift that a new homeowner probably would never buy for themselves – a portable record player. Vinyl is back in style, and your friends will love joining the trend with a stylish and portable vinyl record player that they can use in-home and on the go. These come in a wide variety of styles, colors and designs, so check out your local retail store or department store to see what would best fit your friend’s style!
6. Decorative String Lights
As a new homeowner, your friends will more than likely be eager to decorate their new space. Decorative string lights are a great gift option – they’re trendy yet timeless and can be used indoors or out. And if you’re lucky, your friends may use them to decorate their outdoor space for an outdoor dinner party so that you get to enjoy them, too!
7. A Doormat
A fun, spunky doormat can really make a house feel like a home. The first thing I did when I bought my house was buy a doormat that said “Home Sweet Home” and put it at my front door.
Something about having a doormat made my new house feel warm and inviting even before I moved in. Find a doormat with a message that fits your friend’s unique style, and help them make their new house a home.
8. Porch Accessories
It might sound cliché, but one of the best gifts I received as a new homeowner was a potted fern that now lives on my front porch. Even though it’s winter, giving some sort of porch accessory like one-of-a-kind throw pillows, outdoor furniture or evergreen potted plants as your friend’s Christmas gift is thoughtful and may just become one of their favorite things!
9. Bathtub Tray
This is a great do it yourself Christmas gift for new homeowners! Moving into a new home is a lot of work, so your friend is sure to love this bathtub tray that will help them relax after a long day. If you would prefer to buy a premade bathtub tray instead of making it yourself, check out your local retail store or search online to see what bathtub tray options are available.
You can also turn this idea into a new homeowner gift basket by filling a basket with bath bombs, essential oils, candles and other spa-like relaxation items!
10. Breakfast-in-Bed Tray
If the person you’re buying for is less of a bath person and more of a breakfast-in-bed person, a breakfast-in-bed tray could be the perfect Christmas gift! If you’re crafty, this can be a great do it yourself project, or you can find these at many department and retail stores.
11. Cleaning Supplies Basket
Last, but certainly not least, in our list of perfect gifts for new homeowners – a beautiful basket of cleaning supplies!
I know what you’re thinking – there’s no way that’s something people actually want; however, I would argue that this is one of the best gifts I ever received in my entire life. The gift basket I received came in a trendy wire basket that I now keep my cleaning supplies in to stay organized.
This new homeowner gift basket included quality products for cleaning windows, products for countertops, paper towels, a grout brush, reusable rubber gloves and a plethora of other fantastic cleaning related items.
Cleaning supplies may seem lame, but this is the one new homeowner Christmas gift that is guaranteed to be both loved and enjoyed by any new homeowner. This is a gift perfect for the practical friend or clean-freak family member.
Regardless of what gift you choose to give the new homeowner in your life, your friends and family will more than likely just be excited and happy that you thought of them this holiday season. So try not to stress about what you give as a gift this Christmas – it’s the thought behind the gift that counts!
